Lupus anticoagulant (LA) is not actually an anticoagulant in the traditional sense, but rather it is an autoantibody associated with an increased risk of abnormal blood clotting or thrombosis. It is one of the antibodies associated with an autoimmune disorder called antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Lupus anticoagulant, along with anticardiolipin antibodies and anti-beta-2 glycoprotein I antibodies, are the three main antibodies associated with APS.
